Zero Waste Canada Board Member Co-Authors Op-Ed in Leading Industry Publication The Resource Recycling Magazine

Highlighting Global Alignment on Zero Waste Hierarchy and Policy Action

Zero Waste Canada is proud to recognize the leadership of our Board Member, Jamie Kaminski, who has co-authored an op-ed published in Resource Recycling Magazine, one of North America’s leading voices in sustainable materials management.

The article, titled “In Our Opinion: Policy Leaders Should Embrace the Zero Waste Hierarchy,” was co-written with Gary Liss, Vice-Chair of the Zero Waste International Alliance (ZWIA). Together, they outline the growing influence of the Zero Waste Hierarchy of Highest and Best Use Version 8.1, and the critical role it plays in guiding effective, equitable waste reduction policies.

“This piece is a call to action for policy leaders to strengthen their commitment to upstream prevention and embrace frameworks that create lasting, positive change for the environment and our economy,” said Kaminski.

The op-ed explores the newly released Version 8.1 of the Zero Waste Hierarchy, developed by ZWIA and supported by Zero Waste Canada. Updates to the framework include strengthened guidance around environmental justice, clearer definitions for circular economy concepts, and a deeper emphasis on prevention and ethical responsibility across the full lifecycle of materials.

As the Canadian National Affiliate of the Zero Waste International Alliance (ZWIA), Zero Waste Canada brings a uniquely Canadian voice to the global conversation on Zero Waste leadership and policy, while actively supporting international standards like the Zero Waste Hierarchy of Highest and Best Use.

We encourage readers to explore the article and consider how the updated Hierarchy can inform stronger, more effective policy decisions across Canada and beyond.
