Global Zero Waste Forum 2025 Highlights and Collective Reflections
Zero Waste Canada was honoured to participate in the First Global Zero Waste Forum held in Istanbul, Türkiye in October 2025. Organized under the patronage of H.E. Mrs. Emine Erdoğan, the event brought together policymakers, practitioners, academics, NGOs, and industry leaders committed to advancing Zero Waste solutions on a global scale.
The Forum created a space for collaboration, learning, and shared commitment. We were also grateful to receive an appreciation letter from the President of the Zero Waste Foundation recognizing participants' contributions. This message reflects the mutual respect and dedication of the global Zero Waste community. While the letter was intended for attendees, it was inspiring to see the value placed on collective effort and partnership.
Key Insights from the Global Zero Waste Community
1. Clarifying the Definition of Zero Waste
One of the key takeaways from the Forum was the reinforcement of a clear and shared understanding of what Zero Waste truly represents. Across multiple discussions, speakers emphasized the internationally recognized Zero Waste definition and hierarchy. Many participants also reaffirmed that incineration and burning are not part of a genuine Zero Waste strategy. This consistent message strengthened the collective understanding that Zero Waste begins with preventing waste rather than attempting to manage it after it has been created.
2. Prioritizing Upstream Solutions
The focus on upstream solutions was also a central theme throughout the event. Presenters spoke to the importance of systems that prioritize reuse, refill, and repair. These ideas were explored through practical examples and thoughtful reflections on how circular systems rely on recognizing the true environmental and social costs of single use products. The discussions reinforced that prevention and system design are essential for meaningful progress.
3. Integrating Social Impact
The social dimension of Zero Waste was highlighted frequently as well. Several sessions brought attention to the roles of frontline workers and waste pickers, emphasizing the need for policies that support fair work and community wellbeing. Presentations on period poverty offered powerful examples of Zero Waste solutions that support human health, gender equity, and education. The work shared by organizations providing reusable menstrual products illustrated how deeply Zero Waste is connected to both environmental and social outcomes.
4. The Role of Policy and Governance
Policy and governance emerged as another important area of focus. Conversations reflected on how legislation can support the shift toward reuse and circularity. Examples were shared of governments exploring mandatory targets for reuse and refill systems, along with strategies for encouraging producers to transition away from disposable models. These discussions affirmed that meaningful Zero Waste progress requires coordinated policy action.
5. Strength in Global Collaboration
The event also highlighted the collective strength of the international Zero Waste community. Long standing advocates and new leaders shared insights and experiences, demonstrating the depth and diversity of knowledge across regions. Their contributions reminded attendees of the long history of the movement as well as its ongoing evolution.
A Shared Commitment Moving Forward
As both a partner and participant, Zero Waste Canada left the Forum encouraged by the shared commitment expressed throughout the event. The conversations, the clarity around core principles, and the collaborative spirit among global participants reaffirmed the importance of working together to advance Zero Waste practices.
We remain grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this international gathering and to stand alongside organizations and communities that are working toward a future rooted in prevention, resilience, and circular solutions. The insights and relationships built in Türkiye will continue to guide our work in Canada, and we look forward to ongoing collaboration with the global Zero Waste community!
